Spent or Generated

A person can struggle to follow a ten-minute story and then spend three hours talking without noticing the time. This is often treated as inconsistency. If the person can concentrate for three hours, why couldn't they listen for ten minutes?

The mistake is assuming that all conversation requires attention in the same way. It does not.

Some conversations consume attention. Others generate it.

That difference may explain more about conversational compatibility than whether someone is introverted, extroverted, intelligent, polite — or even interested in the people involved.

What Are We Doing Here?

People use conversation for different purposes. Some broadcast — they tell stories, describe experiences, state opinions and transmit information about themselves. Some interview, asking questions and making the other person the primary object of attention. Some alternate autobiographies: one person tells a story; the other contributes a related story. Some perform, entertaining the table. Some affiliate — the purpose is warmth, agreement, reassurance and confirmation of social bonds. Some compete for status. Some play. And some use conversation as a form of joint exploration.

The distinction is not moral. Every one of these modes has a legitimate use. The problem arises when participants implicitly disagree about what conversation is supposed to produce.

Person-Centered Conversation

Consider a familiar sequence. What do you do? I've worked in finance for twenty years. Then comes the career story. Or: Have you been to Japan? Yes. I went in 2018… Then comes the travel story.

The conversational object is a participant. Information flows primarily from one person to another. This can be highly enjoyable when the listener genuinely wants the information, and it is indispensable when people are getting to know one another. But in groups it creates a structural problem.

If A is telling B about A, what is C doing? Often, C is waiting. The conversation may therefore be perfectly successful for two participants while being almost functionless for a third. The issue isn't selfishness. It is conversational topology. The speaker and listener have built a channel rather than a shared space.

Shared-Object Conversation

Now compare: I wonder why restaurants became so loud. Someone proposes an explanation. Another challenges it. A third mentions architecture. Someone connects that to rent per square foot. Another realizes that table turnover might matter. A counterexample appears. The original claim changes.

Nobody owns the object. Every contribution leaves handles. Anyone can turn it.

This creates a different conversational geometry:

a ↔ object ↔ b ↔ c ↔ object

The conversation itself becomes a shared external workspace.

Attention Maintenance Versus Attention Generation

This is where differences associated with ADHD become interesting. ADHD is often described behaviorally: interrupting, changing topics, struggling to listen, becoming distracted. Those observations are real but incomplete. ADHD alters reward, stimulation, inhibition, working memory and attention regulation — and for some people this makes novelty disproportionately useful for sustaining engagement.

Now compare two conversations. In the first, another person tells a predictable ten-minute story. The listener's task is mostly to maintain attention. In the second, every contribution changes the problem. The listener has to predict, connect, disagree, generate and update. The conversation is continuously producing new reasons to attend.

The second interaction may last twenty times longer while requiring less conscious effort to remain engaged.

The person does not necessarily possess less attention. They may require a higher return on attention.

This is why "short attention span" is such a poor description of some ADHD behavior. The more useful question is: what kind of environment makes attention self-sustaining?

Linear and Associative Minds

Conversation also exposes differences in how thoughts are connected. A relatively linear speaker develops one step at a time. A highly associative speaker may leap:

a → b → c → d
a → f → q → b → m

To the associative speaker, each transition may be obvious. To everyone else, the path can seem chaotic. But associative breadth has advantages in exploratory conversation: distant ideas can be connected quickly, unexpected analogies appear, new candidate explanations proliferate. The disadvantage is that a conversational partner may have to reconstruct missing steps.

Again, neither pole is inherently superior. Linear thought is easier to follow. Associative thought often generates more novelty. The compatibility problem appears when one participant experiences branching as discovery while another experiences it as loss of coherence.

The Two-Minute Test

There is a simple way to evaluate group conversational skill. After someone has spoken for two minutes, ask:

How many opportunities did that contribution create for everyone else?

A weak group contribution often closes possibilities. It is highly specific, autobiographical and difficult to modify. A strong contribution tends to create branches: someone can ask a question, disagree, connect an analogous case, make a joke, or move the topic into another domain.

This is why the best group conversationalists need not speak less. They speak permeably. Their contributions do not monopolize the object. They enlarge it.

Why Social Geometry Matters

This also explains why apparently similar groups can feel different. Two couples are not merely four people. There are already two strong dyads, and those relationships can themselves become conversational objects. One person tells a story about how the pair handles something; the other pair recognizes a similarity or difference. Now the comparison is between systems, not just biographies.

A couple plus one other person is structurally different. The conversation can easily collapse into one member of the couple and the third person engaging while the remaining person becomes an observer. Three unattached individuals can feel different again, because no pre-existing dyad organizes the table.

Headcount is therefore a weak descriptor. What matters is where attention flows and which relationships already exist before the conversation begins.

Conversation as Joint Cognition

The most generative form of conversation does something remarkable. It allows multiple nervous systems to temporarily behave like a distributed cognitive system. One person generates candidates. Another detects weaknesses. Another supplies examples. Someone holds the previous thread while another branches. Someone notices that two apparently different problems have the same structure. No individual needs to perform every cognitive function. The group thinks.

That may explain why certain conversations feel disproportionately energizing. They do not merely communicate completed thought. They produce thought socially.

And that gives us a better definition of conversational compatibility than "we have a lot in common." Two people can share very few interests and have extraordinary conversations if they are good at building objects together. Two people can share an entire biography and bore each other if they mainly exchange records. The critical question may be:

When I speak, do you become an audience — or a collaborator?
